There’s a new kid in Scrabble Town : Scrabble Flash (ARV $29.99). Cute and, well… definitely flashy, he’s sure to be an attention grabber!
Scrabble Flash, one of the latest members of the Hasbro family, comes with five electronic tiles, a set of instructions, and a streamlined, compact carrying case. To play, simply power on each of the five tiles, choose your game (choice of three), and start forming words with the letters that show up on each tile. Whenever you find a word, the tiles will “flash” and your word is recorded electronically for final scoring. At the end of a round, the tiles will display your score as well as the max score.
Even though this is a far cry from classic Scrabble, Scrabble flash has some major pros over the much loved classic:
- The ability to play one player games in addition to multi-player
- An “electronic-judge” which determines the eligibility of a word automatically- no more arguments over the validity of a word
- A limited number of tiles which make the game great for… short attention spans. You can play for as little as a couple minutes at a time
- Automatic score keeping
The way the game records/”finds” words and the interaction among tiles is actually pretty impressive. I expected an electronic game like this to be somewhat buggy, but I didn’t find any major frustrations or flaws with game play. In fact, everyone I showed Scrabble Flash to was pretty impressed with the design.
The overall look of the game is also quite nice with the whole set being extremely portable and attractive. Definitely a cool addition to any household and perfect for both rainy days and for entertaining guests!
