Some emerging fashion designers push boundaries by creating outlandish, exaggerated pieces that even Anna Piaggi might think twice about…  and then there are a breed of designers that are inspired by simplicity; taking cherished, understated forms and breathing a completely new life into them.  In the realm of the latter art is designer Alexa Galler, founder of NYC based apparel brand Eighteenth.

The Spring/Summer 2011 collection from Eighteenth pays homage to the basic jersey tee in its purist form (black, white, and grey solids) while offering unique asymmetrical touches to the classic via everything from off center necklines to shoulder blade cut-outs.  The result is a visually unique yet gloriously wearable collection of “not-so-basic basics”.

There is nothing more lovable than a slouchy tee, and to take an otherwise unremarkable piece and transform it into something completely new and fresh like Alexa does is quite inspiring.  While the collection could have easily become something inaccessible with its affinities for unconventional details, each of the pieces remain highly wearable.

Slightly avant-garde AND completely wearable, a rare combination!
