Giveaway : Nicole Atkins “Mondo Amore” CD (ends 4/17)

nicole atkins mondo amore

Anyone up for some sweet new tunes?  This month we have CD copies of Nicole Atkins‘ latest album Mondo Amore to give away to three readers!

For those unfamiliar with Atkins, all you really need to do take a look at her Late Show performance of “The Way It Is” (from the 2007 album Neptune City) to understand the appeal of her vocal chops:

(I think Dave enjoyed that quite a bit too, yeah? ;))

Mondo Amore is the perfect successor to Neptune City, both combine powerful vocal performances with some super catchy and highly accessible songs.  The album, much like Atkin’s previous works, takes some of the most beautiful elements of music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s and gives them an enjoyable, less melodramatic, modern pop-rock spin.  From powerful 60s style ballads, 60s & 70s power rock, country & western, etc. etc. etc. the album covers an impressive amount of ground stylistically.  The majority of the album also seems to have a general feeling of lightheartedness and the music is something that would appeal to a wide variety of tastes and ages.

At its core, Mondo Amore is very much a pop album and at points almost seems a bit too refined and overproduced.  In my opinion, the major flaw with the album is that it lacks a sort of raw appeal, something that might have made Nicole Atkins already legendary at this point.  The album’s inclination toward being safe plays out as both a weakness and a strength for Atkins.  If you can look beyond the some of the predictability of the album, the better parts will really shine.  Nicole’s ability to create beautiful arrangements that pair nicely with her vocal talents make Mondo Amore an enjoyable contemporary album that will resonate with many a person.
