PEEPS & Company : PEEPS Memories

I haven’t eaten a PEEP in what seems like forever, so when I had the opportunity to write something about them, I seriously debated whether I should even go for it.  Then I realized that the same people who bring us PEEPS also bring us Peanut Chews which had also been a childhood favorite of mine and which I still enjoy occasionally.  So now let us dig waaaay back into the black abyss of my ever fading memory…

Like many other kids PEEPS were an absolute Easter staple of mine.  I liked the chicken shaped peeps best (better than the rabbits) because the shape allowed for more squishy goodness.  The yellow PEEPS were always my favorite because they were a slightly more accurate representation of a true chick’s color.  I actually grew up with a few pet chickens even though I lived in the city… well, in the suburbs.  But I digresss.

If we went to an easter party, PEEPS would be there.  If we got an Easter basket, PEEPS would be inside.  If we even so much as stepped within a 1 foot radius of the door to any super market or drug store around Easter time, PEEPS galore!  While PEEPS were a staple on Easter themselves, they also seemed to become somewhat of an after Easter staple as well.  One of my favorite things to do as a kid would be to check out the after Easter sales and stock up on some favorites (much to my parent’s dismay).    PEEPS at like 75% percent off?  Sounds pretty good to a kid with the unhealthiest sweet tooth you might ever find.  Of course, because stores stock up on PEEPS like crazy there would always be some around during the after Easter sales.

I guess that was one of my first memory of looking for great buys.  I still do this quite a bit and it seems I always compare sale prices to the standard I uphold my after holiday candy sales to: if something is like 70% off, well, that is pretty attractive.

Although I won’t be eating PEEPS anytime soon, I guess they have some pretty fond childhood memories attached.  When you see them in the store you just can’t help but think back on more… carefree times.  I most likely won’t be picking up any for myself anytime soon but you can bet I’ll be on the lookout for some of the other goodies from PEEPS & Company.  Will I find Peanut Chews at 75% off… one can only hope…
